What Are Short Dramas? Micro-Dramas Explained

Short dramas — also called micro-dramas or vertical dramas — are scripted series filmed vertically for phones and told in very short episodes, usually one to three minutes each. The median series on TwistyTV has 60 episodes, which works out to roughly 1 hour to 3 hours for the whole story.

How the format works

Nearly every episode ends on a hook: a reveal, a slap, a proposal, a betrayal. That pacing comes from the apps the format grew up on, which typically charge per episode, so every cliffhanger is a reason to unlock the next one. The result is storytelling with almost no slow scenes — a whole romance, rise or revenge arc plays out in the time a film would spend on its first act.

The format took off in China before apps such as ReelShort, DramaBox, NetShort and FreeReels brought it to English-speaking viewers, with English-language productions alongside Chinese series dubbed or subtitled in English.
